The CiA Publishing team are currently working on upgrading resources for the new version of MS Windows Vista and MS Office 2007. So what is it like?

"I have been involved in numerous MS product upgrades over the years, never being overly impressed with what Microsoft has come up with. Having said that, I have to admit I am impressed with the latest offering or at least for the most part.

"By far the most exciting aspect of Office 2007 for me is that it’s intuitive and the navigation is much more targeted at the task the user is performing. This is done via the new ‘Ribbon’ which replaces the menus and toolbars. For the user this new system does away with the need to go through menus and sub menus to find features, but instead the most relevant features to the task are displayed in the ribbon.

"Vista and Office 2007 are visually very different – or to quote a colleague “pretty”. By making it “pretty” Microsoft have also made the software very memory hungry. For this reason if you are thinking of upgrading, I recommend your PC has good memory, graphic card, fast processor (CPU and a large hard drive).

"In summary, the new version has been designed to speed up the process of creating professional looking documents. The navigation is much improved, although it does take a bit of getting used to. It will, I think make the learners life easier (particularly if they have access to quality learning materials of course)."
